Run:ONE - The beginning...

The idea behind Run:One came about towards the end of 2020. My dad had been suffering with dementia and the family had seen what had previously been a slow deterioration start to quicken. At this stage I had become more and more aware of the great work that the Alzheimer's Society did to help those who suffer and also the support that they provide to families of those who are suffering. I wanted to do something to support the Alzheimer's Society and my mind turned to fundraising ideas.

Of course 2020 had been an awful year, the whole country suffering through Covid and seemingly endless lockdowns. Running had been my method of escape during this time, and I saw many runners out on the otherwise quiet streets. What better way to try and raise money for the Alzheimer's Society than to encourage people to get out and run, and hopefully enjoy the relaxation of running like I did.

There are endless runs out there for runners ranging from 5k up to marathons and beyond. What I wanted to provide was something as accessible as possible: something that could be enjoyed by seasoned runners as well as those who were new to running: something that could be enjoyed by the young and old; something for everyone.

Run:ONE, a 1 mile run, was born. A virtual run to be completed anywhere in the world. Run or walk your mile wherever you like and receive a bespoke medal for your efforts, while contributing to the great work of the Alzheimer's Society. While I harbour thoughts of one day hosting a real live run, in the short term Run:ONE will remain a virtual run.
